A true addiction is an uncontrollable compulsion which provides temporary relief from significant inner pain and increases it. Four types of addiction are substances, including sugar, fat and carbohydrates (comfort foods); relationships, co-dependence, excitement (rage, risk, sexual arousal and relief).
